Who Really Knows What You Want? The Power of a Letter of Wishes

When people think about estate planning, the first thing that usually comes to mind is writing a Will. And while a Will is essential, it often doesn’t tell the whole story.

A Will is a legal document. It must follow strict rules and formal wording.

Because of this, it’s not always the best place to explain the reasoning behind your decisions or to include more personal guidance for the people carrying out your wishes.

This is where a Letter of Wishes can become one of the most valuable – yet often overlooked – parts of your estate planning.

A Letter of Wishes is not legally binding like a Will, but it allows you to provide guidance to your executors or trustees about how you would like certain decisions to be made. Because it is separate from the Will, it can be updated easily as circumstances change without the need to formally rewrite your legal documents.

For example, a Letter of Wishes can help explain why you have divided your estate in a particular way. Perhaps one child has already received financial help during your lifetime, or another may need additional support. Without explanation, unequal gifts can sometimes create tension between family members. A clear letter can prevent misunderstandings and reassure your loved ones that your decisions were carefully considered.

Letters of Wishes can also be helpful where trusts are involved. Trustees often have discretion over how and when funds are distributed. Your letter can guide them on the spirit of your intentions without locking them into rigid instructions that may not suit future circumstances.

Another common use is to record funeral wishes. While many people include funeral instructions in their Will, this isn’t always ideal. Wills are sometimes not read until after funeral arrangements have already begun. A separate letter allows your family to access your preferences quickly.

Beyond practical matters, a Letter of Wishes can also carry something far more personal – your voice. Many people take the opportunity to share messages, reflections, or guidance for their loved ones.

Estate planning is not just about dividing assets. It’s about helping the people you care about navigate a difficult time with clarity and understanding.

A well-written Letter of Wishes can make all the difference.
