When Families Come Together, So Should Their Plans

For many of us, December is the one time of year when generations of the family are gathered in the same place. Grandparents, parents, children, sometimes even great-grandchildren, all under one roof, sharing food, stories, and love.

But once the crackers are pulled and the turkey’s eaten, there’s a powerful opportunity: to talk about the things that matter most.
The truth is, estate planning often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. It feels awkward, even morbid. But the reality is, talking about Wills, LPAs, guardianship and funeral wishes can bring clarity and peace of mind, not fear.
Many families assume these things have already been sorted… but when you ask the questions, the answers often surprise you.
Have your parents put LPAs in place?Do your children know what you’d want for your funeral?Have you named guardians for your kids if something were to happen?Do your siblings agree on who should handle Mum and Dad’s affairs?Would your business cope if you couldn’t run it tomorrow?
These are not easy questions, but they’re easier to tackle together, and while there’s still time. And with so many families gathered during the holidays, there’s rarely a better moment to open the door to these conversations — even if just gently.
It might be over coffee. It might be sparked by a news story. It might be something you raise privately with each generation. However you do it, the important thing is to make a start.
Because when families come together physically, it’s also a chance to align emotionally and practically....to make sure the plans in place reflect the lives you’re all living now.
Don’t wait until a crisis forces the conversation. This Christmas, when you’re all in the same room, make the most of it. Your future selves will thank you.
