New Year, Old Will? Why Your Estate Plan Deserves a Fresh Look

The new year brings a fresh start... a time to take stock, set goals, and get organised. And while you're making resolutions to improve your health or finances, it’s worth asking one important question: Does your Will still reflect your wishes?

The New Year always brings a sense of renewal, a time to reset, reflect, and re-evaluate what matters most. So while you're thinking about health goals, financial resolutions, or clearing out the garage, there’s one more thing worth reviewing that rarely makes the list: your Will.

Most people don’t realise that your Will isn’t a “one and done” document. Life changes... sometimes subtly, sometimes drastically. If your Will was written several years ago (or more), it may no longer reflect your current wishes, circumstances, or the people in your life.

Perhaps you’ve welcomed new grandchildren. Perhaps there’s been a divorce or a death in the family. Maybe your financial situation has changed, or your appointed executors are no longer the best choice. Even minor changes, like a new address or the sale of a property, may require a closer look at your estate planning.

An outdated Will can lead to delays, confusion, unintended tax consequences, and in some cases, heartbreak. It can even result in a partial intestacy, where some of your estate is distributed under the default rules of law rather than your personal wishes.

A quick review now can save your loved ones a great deal of stress in the future.

At Peritum Wills, we recommend reviewing your Will every 3–5 years, or whenever there is a significant life event. If changes are needed, a straightforward update or replacement is often quicker and easier than you’d think.

So as you tick off the items on your January to-do list, don’t forget to include this one. It may just be the most important update you make all year.
